What Exactly is Web Hosting?

In order for you to connect to a website, the web pages have to exist on a web server connected to the internet. The server should be connected directly to the internet by a high speed line. The web server needs to be up and running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, provide data security and be backed-up daily. For all but the largest companies, it's usually more cost effective to rent space from a web hosting company than to operate the web servers at your place of business. Even if you have your own servers, you still need to connect to the internet (usually through an internet service provider).

There are several different kinds of web hosting services available: Free websites, self hosting services and true web hosting.

Self-Hosted Websites

Self-hosted site builders typically offer the fastest, easiest route to a Website. They usually don't require any technical knowledge to build a site because you choose a pre-designed template and add your text or images, and they can be ready to launch within 24 hours.

The down-side is these sites are usually inflexible, only allowing a limited number of Web pages, a limited amount of traffic, offering a narrow selection of templates and may even prevent you from uploading your own pages. Most can't accommodate the use of complex scripts or other more advanced website features. In fact most don't even allow you to save your web pages in the .html format, which is an absolute must if you ever plan to move the site to another hosting company or even use a standard web page editor.

My advice is to avoid these services like the plague. I would never use them to create a business website. They are fine for a personal web page, but since most internet service providers let you put up personal web pages free, why pay extra for one of these sites.

• POP3 Email Accounts - A POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) Email Account is an email account hosted on your site. We allow you to have unlimited POP3 accounts, so you can set up email addresses for all your needs. We only support forwarding these email accounts to your personal email account (such as a free yahoo or Hotmail account) because email accounts use up a lot of hard disk space. • FrontPage Extensions - Microsoft FrontPage is a web development tool. It requires special software be installed on the web server to use all but the most basic features. FrontPage extensions are available for both Microsoft IIS and Apache web servers. You can have FrontPage extensions added to your website on request.
• Mailing List Software - You can forward any of your email accounts to a distribution list you set up in the control panel. This is convenient if you want email to go to all the officers or partners in your business or organization.
• Streaming Media – We support the use of streaming media such as RealAudio or Windows Media files or Flash on the browser side.
• UpTime and Availability Guarantee - Our data center has provided 100% availability and better than 99.9% uptime including scheduled maintenance downtime. • Backups - We back up your website data but we do not provide restore services to your computers since there is always a copy of your website available to you on the web server. You should also backup the data yourself. A good practice is to keep the latest version of your website on the machine where the website is developed and maintained. The cpanel control panel allows you to backup your website to your hard drive as well. You should also make an off line copy (on a CD, DVD or separate hard drive) and update it after every major revision. You put a lot of time, effort and money into developing your website. Make sure you back it up.
• Hard-Disk Storage Space - This is probably the most misunderstood aspect of web hosting. This entire website has 65 web pages and 208 other files stored on the web server and uses less than 10 MB of hard disk space. We have a motorcycle club as a client with over a 2,000 high-resolution photographs, ten years worth of newsletter articles, video clips, sound recordings, etc. stored on their website. It currently uses 85 MB of hard disk space. This is why our standard website hosting packages start at 50 MB of space. It's all the space most small businesses will ever need.

  But, if you do need more space, we will add it at no extra cost as long as you are not storing email on the web server. Why pay for space you may never need?
